Becoming Known for Something Important with Megan Walker

Megan Walker: Hello, and welcome to Beyond Clinical Success. I'm Megan Walker, and today I'd like to talk to you about becoming known for something important, because many healthcare professionals tell me that they want to become recognised leaders in their field. But I don't believe that recognition itself is the goal.

Impact is the goal, and recognition simply follows. Over time, something interesting happens in your career. You've been accumulating wisdom, so much experience, stories, frameworks, methodologies and patterns, and you really know what works with your clients. And eventually, you realise that perhaps your ideas deserve a bigger audience, a national or even an international audience.

But here's where many people get stuck. They try to do everything, all at once. They're posting on social media. They're creating a podcast. They're writing healthcare books. They're also pulling together online courses. They're speaking at as many stages as will have them. They're setting up a membership. They're running webinars, and so on. And very quickly, they become extremely overwhelmed, and everything stops.

Leadership isn't about doing everything. It's about creating the right thought leader assets in the right order, and understanding that authority is built more slowly. I often think about books, not because everyone needs to write one, but because books represent something really important. They represent ideas, intellectual property, a body of work, and ultimately, that's what thought leadership is. It's creating something valuable that outlives you, something that helps people long after you've created it.

And here's the beautiful part. You don't need to become recognised because you're chasing recognition or ego. You choose to become recognised because you consistently want to help more and more people. You want to share your ideas, and you're going to contribute more generously in a bigger way.

So it's time to remain curious and start building your authority, because that's what's then going to build your influence, and people will start associating your name with something really meaningful in a niche that you choose. Not because you've tried to become famous, but because you became really useful to them as their leader and their guide.

So if you're wondering whether your ideas are worthy of being shared, and I'm sure they are, if you're wondering whether your frameworks matter, and if they've helped people before, then they can help people again, and if you're wondering whether your experience is valuable, I want to encourage you to lean in.

The world needs more experienced healthcare professionals who are willing to share what they've learned, because perhaps the most important work of your career isn't behind you. Perhaps it's still to come.

Thank you so much for joining me for today's episode, and I look forward to seeing you next time on Beyond Clinical Success.
