"Stepping On Stage with Colin Boyd"

Megan Walker: Hello everyone, welcome to Healthcare Online. I'm Megan Walker, and I'm absolutely delighted to introduce you to Colin Boyd — superstar of stage and webinars, and also my coach. Without Colin, I would not be sitting here in front of you today. Before I entered Colin's world, I was still running my old done-for-you agency with staff, feeling stuck, and wanting to move into the scalable space. This is the man who helped me do exactly that. Colin, how are you?

Colin Boyd: I'm amazing, Megan. It's so good to be here. And I’ll say this — you were already a rockstar when you joined. You came with so much experience. When someone brings great experience and commitment, and they follow a system, they get results. That’s exactly what you help your clients do, and it’s one of the reasons you’ve seen so much success — you’re highly specialized. You're not a generalist; you’re a brain surgeon in your field.

Megan Walker: Well, my audience does include a few actual brain surgeons, so they’ll love that. I work with a lot of successful practice owners who are very busy. They have teams, they're seeing patients all day — sometimes eight or more back-to-back — and there’s a ceiling on income because it’s tied to time. They know scaling through staff alone can lead to burnout. So when they start thinking about building an expert business, the confidence piece can be a real barrier. It means being visible and being the face of their brand. Can you talk about that fear of stepping forward?

Colin Boyd: Absolutely. Becoming the face of your brand is a powerful move, especially in an age where trust matters more than ever. With everything becoming more digital and automated, people want real humans. But when you step forward, it triggers very normal human fears: fear of not being accepted, fear of being criticized, fear of being “found out.” Even when you are qualified, it can feel like you’re not.

I remember my first paid speaking gig — it was with HP — and the event organizer told me there would be five to five and a half thousand people attending. I froze inside. I thought, “Who am I to speak? I’m too young. I don’t know enough.” But I prepared, I showed up, I delivered — and what I realized is that fear appears because what you're doing matters. It’s a sign that there’s growth on the other side. And the other side of that discomfort is freedom.

To grow your business, you need exposure. And exposure will always bring up discomfort. The key is to act even with the fear. The people who do that are the ones who create real impact in their industry.

Megan Walker: So true. And when we talk about “stages,” what are the practical stages available to healthcare and medical professionals who are ready to be seen?

Colin Boyd: There are so many. Your industry runs conferences constantly — in-person and virtual. Many of your listeners probably attend them already. One of my clients used to attend conferences but never thought of speaking. When she pitched a case study from her work, they invited her to present — and afterward, she received four job offers.

When you step on a stage, you gain three superpowers:

  1. Authority

  2. Connection

  3. Leveraged influence — one-to-many instead of one-to-one.

But you don’t have to start big. A “stage” can be:

  • A webinar for ten people.

  • A small education session in your clinic.

  • A monthly presentation to a professional association.

  • Your own Zoom workshop.

Just start small. Don’t try to be fancy. Take imperfect action; confidence builds after you start, not before.

Megan Walker: Yes — the confidence comes later. If you wait for confidence first, you’ll wait forever.

Now, let’s talk about the benefits of running an expert business. I hear people say, “I’d love to do that, but it’s a lot of work.” And yes, it is. But the benefits are enormous. What’s your view?

Colin Boyd: When you sell expertise — courses, coaching, educational resources — you’re no longer selling time. You’re selling structured knowledge, which is incredibly scalable. Even if you simply add a course as part of your treatment package, your offer becomes more valuable and differentiated. And when you're ready to sell it separately, the leverage is huge — you're helping multiple people at once, which creates better margins and often better results.

Information-based business models are some of the most profitable in the world — comparable to software businesses. And they fit beautifully with healthcare professionals who already have deep expertise.

Megan Walker: So expert businesses can include software, online courses, memberships, books — speaking of which, you’ve just launched one. Tell us about that.

Colin Boyd: The book is called One Presentation Away. The core idea is that building one great presentation that sells your services is one of the most powerful tools you can have — because it lets you sell one-to-many while building authority and connection.

It took four months to write, but seventeen years to refine the content. My goal was to write the best book on sales presentations ever written — because honestly, most books in this space aren’t great. This one is full of real frameworks, case studies, stories, and the exact steps to structure a presentation that actually converts.

You can get it at: https://onepresentationawaybook.com
Or on Amazon — and the book link includes bonuses and templates.

Megan Walker: Amazing. And I’ll say this — when Colin talks, I make money. So imagine what happens when you read his book.

Colin, thank you so much for sharing your wisdom today — about courage, visibility, and thinking bigger. To everyone listening: get the book, start small, start imperfectly, and keep going.

Colin Boyd: Thank you, Megan. Always great to talk with you.
